National Theatre Wales

National Theatre Wales received funding to attend the National Indigenous Theatre Forum of Australia and Brisbane Festival, Australia, to present to other companies their TEAM model and Big Democracy Project.

In September 2015 Gavin Porter and Devinda De Silva were invited to attend the National Indigenous Theatre Forum in Brisbane, Australia – a three day forum where Indigenous practitioners from around the world come together with a focus on the advancement of the Indigenous theatre sector in Australia. Their invite stemmed from an interest in NTW’s work, specifically how they work with communities through their Big Democracy and TEAM strands.

Their visit enabled them to place NTW’s work within a wider international context, but also learn from theatre practitioners whose practice is very much focussed on specific communities with a complex history and relationship with the wider societies they operate within. This was a rare opportunity for NTW to build relationships with Indigenous artists not only from Australia but also from Canada, The Democratic Republic of Congo and New Zealand.

"We now feel very much part of this international network and hope to build on these relationships in the future. We’ve already seen aspects NTW’s practice being adopted in Australia." – Devinda De Silva

WAI supported Gavin Porter and Devinda De Silva to travel to Australia to take part and contribute to the National Indigenous Theatre Forum.
