Held in Kansas City each year, Folk Alliance International is where the world comes together to celebrate Folk Music in all its shape and sizes. Wales has been well represented at this event for over three years, and has been working in partnership with partners from across the UK to host a dedicated private showcase room at the event. This offers some of Wales’ best folk artists and opportunity to perform to agents, promoters and bookers in the North American music industry, as well as representatives from further afield.
Three Welsh artists were chosen for official showcases at this year’s Folk Alliance International: Chris Jones, Lowri Evans and Kizzy Crawford. Unfortunately, due to ambiguous difficulty with US immigration on her way to Kansas City, Kizzy was unable to reach her destination and her audience.
Gwyneth Glyn was also at the event and managed to fill Kizzy’s spot to ensure a full Welsh programme, and was even quoted as ‘an emerging talent with an echo of the young Joni Mitchell’. (www.kansascity.com) Gwyneth also participated in a residency at the House of Songs in Austin, Texas. This is the first Wales Arts International funded residency here, making the most out of access to the North American networks in Austin and Kansas City.
Despite Kizzy’s difficulties, Wales presented a strong and inspiring front, playing alongside great names from the UK such as Ciaran Lavery and Bernadette Morris from Northern Ireland and Rosie Hood, The Young’uns and Jess Morgan from England.
