Three Welsh bands were invited to showcase their music at Folk Alliance International conference in Kansas City from 19-23 February, 2014, which they attended through support from Wales Arts International and Arts Council of Wales.
High-energy folksters Calan were joined by guest harpist Gwenan Gibbard. Mother-and-daughter duo DnA were also invited to showcase there, as were Olion Byw.
The conference hosted two thousand showcases over four days, and the Welsh artists were a part of a bigger British delegation under the banner Horizons – an initiative started in Wales for WOMEX 2013 representing a World of Music from the UK and Ireland.
Since 1989, Folk Alliance has served as the headquarters for Folk Music and Dance. With over 2800 members worldwide and an annual conference that is one of the five largest music conferences in North America, Folk Alliance continues to grow and mature while providing a unique range of member services to the folk music community.
Calan in particular had a successful Folk Alliance, and secured a US agent, Robyn Boyd of Wooden Ship productions, as a direct result. This is a key step in the band’s development to widen their audience internationally. They also secured dates in a number of festivals in both the USA and Canada and were offered a range of promotional opportunities, as well as a US tour in 2015.
