Tanzmesse 2018

Tanzmesse 2018

International Tanzmesse is one of the largest professional gatherings dedicated to contemporary dance. Taking place every two years in Dusseldorf, Germany, this year it will happen between 29 August and 1 September 2018.

There are three primary aspects to Tanzmesse:

Trade Fair – the exhibition halls offer a space where companies, artists, local governments and agencies can present their own work and represent artists.

Festival Programme - an artistic programme of live performances selected following an open call, either as fully produced pieces or as excerpts as part of the Open Studios, runs across 11 stages during the period.

Debates and information sessions – a programme of talks and information sharing on specific topics.

Supported by Wales Arts International and led by National Dance Company Wales and a group of organisations supporting contemporary dance in Wales, 2016 saw the first Dance From Wales stand at Tanzmesse.

National Dance Company Wales will again lead a Wales stand at Tanzmesse 2018 with support from Wales Arts International.

We are offering three bursaries to individual dance practitioners or producers in Wales at the early stages of developing international work to attend Tanzmesse.

Who should apply?

You will be an individual dance practitioner or producer based in Wales, currently developing a track record in Wales and at the early stages of developing an international profile and audience for your work. As a delegate you will get the opportunity to explore international markets and the role of showcasing.

We are looking to support those who are relatively new to representing their work within an international marketplace and would benefit from experiencing the process of attending such a marketplace through a supported visit to Tanzmesse.

What we will cover:

We will organise and cover costs for:

  •  International travel and transfers;
  •  Accommodation;
  •  Delegate pass;
  •  A stipend of £120.00 to cover per diems;
  •  A contribution of up to £150.00 to cover the adaptation of existing marketing materials.

There will be a briefing session ahead of the visit and you will receive support and advice before and during the visit by National Dance Company Wales and Wales Arts International.

There will be time for you to participate in the seminar programme, to attend networking events and to go to shows within the artistic programme; however, you will be expected to contribute to the staffing of the stand during specified hours.

There will be a maximum of 3 places.

You must be available to participate in the full period of Tanzmesse (29 August to 1 September 2018, plus travel days on 28 August and 2 September) and have marketing material available to be adapted for use at Tanzmesse.

The application:

We will need to assess the anticipated impact of participating in the supported visit to Tanzmesse on your developing international career, so we want to know (in 750 words or less):

  •  What you’d like to get out of the visit and why you’re interested in attending Tanzmesse 2018;
  •  Why it’s a timely opportunity;
  •  How you can act as an ambassador for contemporary dance in Wales;
  •  The international projects or networks you’ve been involved in to date and any current international interest in your work;
  •  The intenational trade fairs or events you have previously attended.

When do I apply?

The application deadline is Friday 29 June at 9am.

Successful candidates will be notified by the end of the following week.
