Welsh Music Goes Stateside

Corners of America will be turning Welsh this month as musicians from across Wales descend on Texas and Missouri for The House of Songs, Folk Alliance International and South by South West (SXSW). 11 Feb 2016

Gareth Bonello, aka The Gentle Good, a singer-songwriter and folk musician from Cardiff will join international musicians at the House of Songs. This will be biggest collaboration to date for The House of Songs - a songwriter exchange programme based in Austin - with nine musicians from five different countries writing new music with local artists. The results of the collaborative songwriting will be performed at the upcoming Folk Alliance International Conference, Camp and Fair in Kansas City, Missouri between 17-21 February.

Joining Gareth at Folk Alliance International- the world’s largest gathering of the Folk music industry and community - will be Lleuwen, a singer, songwriter and guitarist from the Ogwen Valley; Calan, 5 young musicians giving a fresh and vibrant sound to traditional Welsh music which are returning to the conference for the second time and Plu, a sibling trio from Snowdonia who play alternative Welsh language folk music with hints of country.

Between 11 – 20 March, Welsh artists will descend on SXSW, one of the world’s biggest and most important music showcase festivals held in Austin, Texas. This year’s festival will feature The People The Poet who self-released their critically acclaimed debut concept album "The Narrator"s sent into the band by their fans in 2013; Violet Skies - a singer-songwriter from Chepstow in Monmouthshire; Estrons - an alternative rock band based in Cardiff and Gwenno - a sound artist, DJ, radio presenter and singer from Cardiff.

These opportunities have been supported through Wales Arts International as part of their wider work to create new international opportunities for the cultural sector in Wales.

Nikki Morgan, Head of Wales Arts International, said:

"These conferences and festivals are key gatherings for new music talent and industry movers and shakers. It can be a career changing moment for both acts and music businesses and we’re making sure that Wales is at the centre of these events, making the most of the opportunities that arise, both artistically and economically."
