Lleuwen to represent Wales at WOMEX 14 in Santiago

Cerdd Cymru: Music Wales is delighted to announce that the Welsh singer songwriter Lleuwen has been selected to showcase at the Horizons stage at WOMEX held this year in Santiago de Compostela, Galicia, Spain, from Wednesday 22 to Sunday 26 October 2014. A year after hosting the highly successful WOMEX 13 in Cardiff, Wales will once again be represented at WOMEX in Spain through the Horizons partnership with England, Ireland, Northern Ireland and Scotland.

WOMEX is the most important international professional market of world music. This international fair brings together professionals from the worlds of folk, roots, ethnic and traditional music and also includes concerts, conferences, a DJ summit and documentary films. Described by UNESCO - the Global Alliance for Cultural Diversity, WOMEX is:

"The most important international professional market of world music of every kind. It contributes to networking as an effective means of promoting music and culture of all kinds across frontiers."

Lleuwen Steffan is a singer/songwriter from the Ogwen Valley in Wales. In 2005 she released Duw A Wyr / God Only Knows, a collection of contemporary interpretations of old Welsh hymns. This collaboration with composer Huw Warren and saxophonist Mark Lockheart was described by critic Stuart Nicholson as 'The most unusual, strangely beautiful album that you're likely to hear.'

Her 2007 debut solo album Penmon (named after her Anglesey home) saw Lleuwen take her music in a more personal direction. Staying true to her roots by focusing the album around the ebb and flow of the Welsh landscape, Lleuwen established herself as a solo artist in her own right and her album was met by great reviews internationally.

Interested in Celtic connections through music, Lleuwen performed with Breton singer Nolwenn Korbell at the Lorient Inter-Celtic Festival in 2008. Following that performance, Lleuwen was awarded a Creative Wales Award by Arts Council of Wales that enabled her to continue her work with Breton musicians and record Tân, her most successful album to date. The album was co-produced by Vincent Guerin and was awarded Album of the Year for France 3 TV's FR3 Awards in 2011. It was also nominated for the Welsh Music Prize in the same year. She will be showcasing at WOMEX with her inspired pan-Celtic support band including Vincent Guerin (base), Manon Steffan Ros (vocals) and Aimee Farrell Courtney (bodhran).

Horizons is a partnership that was developed ahead of WOMEX 13 in Cardiff to bring together the wealth of music traditions and cultures of England, Ireland, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales. 3 showcases will be held at WOMEX 14 and Lleuwen will be one of the acts performing under the Horizons banner.

Eluned Haf, Head of Wales Arts International and Director of Cerdd Cymru: Music Wales said:

"I’m delighted to confirm that Lleuwen has been selected to showcase at the Horizons stage at WOMEX this year. Lleuwen is a wonderful Welsh artist who has given Celtic music a new international twist. Her authentic sounds and the great musicianship will make Wales proud at WOMEX this year and will enhance the growing reputation we have been cultivating internationally for Wales and our musicians."

Speaking ahead of the announcement Lleuwen said:

"The band and I are really looking forward to hear and meet musicians from all around the world. This will be my first time at WOMEX. Having a showcase is the icing on the cake and I am so happy to be representing Wales. I can't wait to share the music, the songs and the language with the WOMEX audience."
