THE GENTLE GOOD WINS THE WELSH LANGUAGE ALBUM OF THE YEAR PRIZE

The Gentle Good has won the inaugral Welsh Language Album of the Year Prize. This was announced at a special ceremony in Caffi Maes B this evening. The album was chosen following a panel discussion between 11 adjudicators on the Maes earlier today.

A jury of individuals involved with the Welsh music industry have discussed a wide range of albums released this year, and the shortlist reflected the eclectic nature of the discussion and the diverse mix of music released and recorded in Welsh and in Wales. 10 albums were placed on the shortlist:

· Alaw – Melody

· Bromas - Byr Dymor (Rasp)

· Candelas

· DnA - Adnabod (Fflach Tradd)

· Gildas - Sgwennu Stori (Sbrigyn Ymborth)

· Gwenan Gibbard - Cerdd Dannau (Sain)

· Llwybr Llaethog - Dub Cymraeg (Neud Nid Deud)

· Plu (Sbrigyn Ymborth)

· The Gentle Good - Y Bardd Anfarwol (Bubblewrap Records)

· Yr Ods - Llithro (Copa)

The Gentle Good’s album, Y Bardd Anfarwol, was inspired by Gareth Bonello's six week journey to the Chengdu region of China, and was released on the Bubblewrap Collective label.

He manages to blend folk influences from both China and Wales together, while telling us the story of the life and poetry of the legendary poet Li-Bai.

One of the organisers, Guto Brychan, said, "The Eisteddfod presents a number of awards and honours every year, and there are prizes for specific genres of music, but this award has been created to celebrate Welsh language music across the board over the past year.

"The discussion has been interesting with a large number of albums of all types discussed, covering all kinds of style and musical genre, and I think that the short list reflected this discussion, and shows there is room for this award, as a large number of albums captured the imagination of the jury. It's hard to think of any other award with an album of ‘dub’ music on the same shortlist as a cerdd dant album!"

The Gentle Good received a beautiful trophy created by artist, Ann Catrin Evans.

The Carmarthenshire National Eisteddfod is held on the Festival Fields, Millennium Coastal Park until 9 August. For more information please go to www.eisteddfod .org.uk.
