The Dance Dome

The Dance Dome

The Dance Dome presents 360° dance films from Wales at the 25th Macau Arts Festival in China.

The fulldome films The Beautiful, The Sublime and ‘Pal O’ Me Heart’ were presented by the Dance Dome at the 25th edition of the Macau Arts Festival in May 2014.

The Dance Dome is a portable 360° cinema that blurs the boundaries between movement, digital technology and cinema, wrapping dance around the viewer to create a truly unique immersive experience.

As a self contained venue the Dance Dome, equiped with a 3k Fulldome.pro projection system, provides visitors with a visual experience normally only accessible from within a planetarium environment.

Co-produced by the multimedia collective 4π Productions and Coreo Cymru (Creative Producer for Dance in Wales) with support from the Arts Council of Wales and Chapter, the Dance Dome films have been created by an international crew and feature choreography by award-winning companies Taikabox, Harnisch-Lacey Dance Theatre and Earthfall.

The Dance Dome´s 2014 tour begins later this month in Macau, China, where it will be installed for two weeks presenting a trilogy of fulldome films produced in Wales.

Carole Blade, Creative Producer for Dance in Wales said:

"This unique programme will push the boundaries for both digital technology and contemporary dance. By using a portable dome, Coreo Cymru in collaboration with 4π Productions are introducing a new form of presenting contemporary dance to the wider public".

Matt Wright, Director of 4π Productions UK, said:

‘Bringing our dome to Macau really excites us at 4π as we believe it will be a completely unique experience new to this arts festival. Developing the Dance Dome project and its immersive content has provided many technical and creative challenges so we can’t wait to see how audiences react’.

The film ‘Pal O’ Me Heart’ (completed in 2013) is the project’s newest production featuring a narrative driven 22 minute storyline and is based upon Earthfall’s award winning live performance piece ‘At Swim Two Boys’. It will be accompanied by ‘The Beautiful’, featuring contemporary dance and Chinese pole elements and the 2012 Innovation Prize Winner at Domefest, USA, ‘The Sublime’, which explores break-dance and parkour styles.

The Dance Dome was at Macau Plaza between the 19th and the 25th of May and at Taipa

Temple between the 28th May to the 1st of June 2014.

The Dance Dome will be touring across Wales this summer thanks to the support of the Arts Council of Wales. It will visit Cardiff, Swansea, Harlech, Brecon, Newport, Aberystwyth and Portmeirion.
