WOMEX 13 Opening Concert Line up

Cerys Mathews announces musicians to play in WOMEX 13 Opening Concert

Land of Song, a spectacular concert celebrating the music traditions of Wales and telling the Nation’s story, under the Artistic Direction of Cerys Matthews will open WOMEX 13, Cardiff on 23 October this year. Today, Cerdd Cymru: Music Wales and Cerys Matthews announced some of the names of leading musicians from Wales selected to perform at the prestigious event at Wales Millennium Centre, for a gathered audience of world music experts and music press from around the globe, and music fans from across Wales and the UK.

WOMEX is the most important international professional market of world music. This international fair brings together professionals from the worlds of folk, roots, ethnic and traditional music and also includes concerts, conferences and documentary films. The opening concert is a highly prized event, and each year nations compete to present the concert and showcase their music culture, understanding the benefits in terms of profile, increasing music exports and cultural tourism. WOMEX announced that Wales’ proposal, headed up by Cerys Matthews as Artistic Director, had been awarded the opening concert in March this year. Announcing details of the performance Cerys has been masterminding for the past year, she said:

"The World Music Expo, WOMEX , (World Music’s equivalent to the Cannes Film Festival) is landing in and bedding down in the stadium-crowned, river-flowing, harmony singing city of Cardiff this year.

It's a masterstroke bringing WOMEX to Wales in 2013 - as there is a palpable excitement and confidence following a great few months for sports - both Cardiff City and Swansea City now up in the Premiership, and this came after our Six Nations Gram Slam victory last year. Things are hotting up in the arts too, it’s RS Thomas' centenary this year, and our most recognised and beloved export, Dylan Thomas will see 2014 filled with operas, sculptures, canoe trips (yes you read right) and performances all dedicated to his memory, and Cardiff is a ready and eager host to the up coming musical feast of WOMEX.

The Wales Millennium Centre declares ‘ In these stones horizons sing! ' and its doors and arms will be thrown wide open to welcome visiting delegates and locals alike in a celebration of song, dance and poetry.

Together we'll explore 30,000 years of Wales’ story and culture and enjoy the company of today's leading folk musicians, Cass Meurig, Gwenan Gibbard, D n A , Georgia Ruth , Patrick Rimes , Siân James , Robin Huw Bowen, Wales-India collaboration between Gwyneth Glyn and Tauseef Achtar, ‘Ghazalaw’, Twm Morys and more. Young clog dancers, ' Dawnswyr Bro Taf' will battle out it out with the multi-national dancers of Ballet Cymru over our iconic songs. We'll count goats, celebrate the humble saucepan, ramble over rocks and warm the auditorium ready for the powerful swell of those sweet old LAND OF SONG harmonies, bolstered by the quintessentially Welsh sounds of the Treorchy Male Voice Choir along with the local school choir of Mount Stuart primary.

So join me , Cerys Matthews and all my fellow performers for a unique night of joyful celebrations in Cardiff, October 23rd 2103."

Eluned Haf is Director of Cerdd Cymru: Music Wales the host partner for WOMEX 13 and together with the Wales Millennium Centre are co-producing of the Land of Song Opening Concert. Adding to today’s announcement, she said:

"The opening concert of every WOMEX is an opportunity for one nation to present its music culture to the world. We’re honoured that WOMEX has entrusted this to Wales this year. It’s a golden opportunity to share our music treasures with the music world. It will be an incredible evening of discovery and harmony, presenting the richness of our traditions for audiences in Wales, throughout the UK and our international music guests. Cerys Matthews’ carefully selected songs, singers and musicians will create a true celebration; a journey through centuries of traditions and singing in the land of song. We’re also very proud of the strength of the line up and of what this hour packed with Wales’ passion for song and musical soul will do in terms of positioning our music culture and musicians on a world stage. It will raise Wales’ profile, stimulate interest in and demand for our music and musicians globally - with all that means in terms of export, development of Wales’ music economy and of course cultural tourism. It’s going to be one very special evening, the effects of which will echo for years to come."

Prom goers, BBC Radio 3 and BBC Radio 6 Music listeners will get a flavor of the concert and Wales’s music when Gwenan Gibbard, Patrick Rimes, Mason Neely, Frank Moon and Andy Coughlan join Cerys on stage for a BBC Late Night Prom at the Albert Hall on 12 August. They’ll be introducing Proms audiences to some old Welsh tunes and aiming to make the Hall jig to the groove. The performance will be broadcast live on BBC Radio 3 and BBC Radio 6 Music.
