David Cushway works with the medium of clay, in both its fired and unfired states, exploring not just its qualities but its meanings:
Unfired clay, will support and nurture life, fired clay is the history of life or what we may term culture. Using the material in both its states allows me to comment on the relationships between nature and culture. Ceramics occupies a unique position in humankind: it is used in all ceremonies associated with life, death and everything in between. Our relationship to the earth from which we draw clay to use is a fundamental concern within my practice. So one may say that my work encompasses the archaeological, environmental, cultural, spiritual and functional, in terms of clay and its uses.
