Out of Nowhere

Martin Barlow curated an exhibition of work by Welsh artists. The exhibition ‘Out of Nowhere’ featured the work of Sean Edwards, Peter Finnemore, Fern Thomas, Bedwyr Williams, Lois Williams, Sue Williams, and Craig Wood. It was shown at the Centre for Contemporary Art Tbilisi (CCAT) from 8 August 2014 to 8 December 2014, and was in fact the inaugural exhibition for that organisation’s new gallery space. The exhibition formed part of Artisterium, an annual city-wide visual arts event, supported by Georgia’s Ministry of Culture, in which exhibitions by Georgian and international artists are shown in around half-a-dozen of Tbilisi’s main museums and galleries. The theme of this edition, Artisterium 7, asked participants to reflect on problems, whether of a personal, artistic, philosophical, socio-political, environmental or any other nature. Each in his or her own way, the seven artists in ‘Out Of Nowhere’ looked at problems and manifestations of malfunction or disorder, their work emerging from some perception of difficulty, clash or dilemma. It followed participation of two artists from Wales in Artisterium 4 in 2011.

Martin Barlow said:

"The exhibition could not have taken place without WAI’s support. It provided a stimulus for several of the artists to develop new work, and in particular for Craig Wood to make a research visit to Georgia and to make work specifically in relation to his encounter with Tbilisi and its culture. As a result of her participation in the exhibition, Lois Williams was invited to participate in another event in 2015 (Fest I Nova). It enabled me to consolidate my profile within Georgia as a curator of exhibitions from Wales and the UK which are of interest and relevance to Georgian audiences".
