Research and Development Residency at WorkSpaceBrussels

Joanna was supported to undertake a three week residency at the internationally acclaimed arts organisation Work Space Brussels in May 2015, where she developed a new work, Don’t think about a purple daisy’.

"During the first week I opened my studio practice to artists interested in engaging with the work. Visual, sound and dance artists, philosophers and architects all connected with WSB joined me in my investigations. This was an enriching part of the process, and a fantastic opportunity to connect with the wider arts scene in Brussels. WSB fed back that this was the first time an artist in residence had worked in this way, and saw the potential for future collaborations and ways of international artists experiencing a residency period.

Work Space Brussels facilitated a sharing at Kaai Studios, which included a feedback session. We were joined by some of the artists who had attended the first week as well as others Work Space Brussels had invited. We gained valuable feedback from the sharing; we discussed the hierarchy within performance work, and the difficulty in balancing live performance with film and objects. We also spent time questioning the function of sound within the installation.

The experience and feedback we gained in Brussels allowed gave us the momentum and inspiration to continue the work and secure additional funds. We went on to create a durational performance installation, which premiered in Cardiff Dance Festival in November 2015. ‘Don’t think about a purple daisy’ is now is available for UK and international touring.
