Bregenz Music Festival Coverage in Wales Arts Review

Wales Arts Review was funded to enable Steph Power to travel to Bregenzer Festspiele 2014 to provide coverage of the event.

"The 2014 Bregenz Festival was the 11th and final one under the artistic directorship of Welsh National Opera’s CEO and Artistic Director David Pountney. My visit enabled me to gain insight into his work there, and to compare and contrast it with his work at WNO: specifically with regard to how his concept of opera production and programming fits within a wider European context, and how running a festival differs from running a national, touring company. I was also able to see how Pountney worked with his team of designers in Bregenz, assembled over many years - many of whom also work on his productions at WNO.

The value of the project to me as a writer and expert in opera and contemporary music was immense. As well as bringing my own work as a journalist and critic to international attention (and that of the Wales Arts Review), the visit enabled me to gain greater understanding of how operas produced in Wales reflect a Europe-wide heritage of musical, literary and intellectual development and culture - and vice versa."
