Workshop with Rabab Ghazoul, Jonathan Arndell 2015

Arndell, Jonathan

Wales/Palestine cultural exchange

This award was a research and development visit for building links between arts communities in Palestine and in Wales. Jonathan travelled with Wales-based socially engaged artist, Rabab Ghazoul, to meet with contacts in Jerusalem and see what they could offer communities through future collaboration. They developed a good relationship with a gallery in Palestine, Al Hoash, as a place that are attempting to engage with people on the street. Whilst established artists look beyond Palestine for opportunities to work, younger artists could benefit from international collaboration and exchange.

"At our meeting with Alia on the last day of our visit Rabab and I reported back on the outcomes of our various meetings and of Rabab’s workshop. We were able to outline our impressions of the context within which Al Hoash has to operate, and to agree with Alia that her attempts ‘to build synergies which can revive the city’ were something with which we could readily engage."

They are now convinced that Al Hoash are the right organisation to be taking this forward with, and plan on continuing work with them and developing their network for exchange over the coming months.
